What Can We Do for the Environment

Hello, everyone. I’m Li Hua. It’s nice to speak about what we can do for the environment, and I think each of us can do a little bit to help with this problem.

The first thing we can do is to use cloth bags in stead of plastic bags when we go shopping. It helps to protect the environment. The second thing we can do is to reuse(再利用) the old textbooks as possible as we can. We should also never forget to turn off the lights when we leave the classrooms in order to save energy. What’s more, it would be better if we walk or ride a bike to school. We should try our best to reduce pollution and waste.

In fact, even the simplest everyday activities(日常活动) can make a real difference to(对…有影响) the environment. I believe we can make the world a better place to live in.

Thank you for your listening!

如;Natural Resources

Nature has provided us with many kinds of resources. Almost everything we use in our everyday life comes from Nature. The food we eat, the water we drink, the clothes we wear, the concrete and bricks to build our houses, the materials to make bikes we ride, etc. all come originally from Nature.
People have been making use of these natural supplies for thousands of years. With the development of technology and the increase of the population, the amount and range of materials taken has increased. It is estimated that this tread will continue in the years to come.
However, natural resources are not in exhaustible. Some resources are already nearly used up. For example, the end of the world’s fuel is already within sight. Such an essential daily item as water is in short supply in many parts of the world. We can no longer thoughtlessly use the many resources provided by Nature. We must learn to conserve what remains.

We Have Only One World

When industries grow, pollution also grows. Today the problem of environment has become more and more important. The world population is rising so quickly that the world has become too crowded. We are using up our natural resources too quickly and at the same time we are polluting our environment with dangerous chemicals. If we don’t take action immediately, then we will destroy our only world.
Man has made great progress in environment protection. Government of many countries has established laws to protect the forest and sea resource and to stop the environmental pollution.
Still more measures should be taken to solve the problem. First, we should start by educating the public about the hazards of pollution. The government on its part should also design stricter laws. This is not only for our own generation but also for the future generation to come.
It is necessary to protect our nature environment. We must begin now to protect our only world.

Make The Best Use of Our Land

It is the land that has been providing us with everything we need for centuries. In other words, almost everything we use daily comes from the land directly or indirectly. The food, clothes, houses, even the books and furniture are all supplied by the land. But the limited land is decreasing at a surprising speed. With the expanding of the cities, the development of the industry and over population, lots of large pieces of good farmland are being turned into residential areas with many houses and apartment buildings, or industrial areas, or warehouses.
Therefore some measures must be taken to stop the abusing of our farmland. On the other hand, we should let everyone realize the danger of being short of land. And also we should educate them how to make better use of our land.

As you know, there's no enough clean water for people. So many of them lose their lives because of water. In a lot of

countries, people have to cut trees for living. So there's nothing to keep water from running away. Also we have polluted the land, the river and the air. So we have to face more and more floods and droughts .
It's time that we must do something useful to protect our environment. We can plant trees and take good care of them. We can save the water and ask our parents to do so. We can't throw any litter onto the ground and we should collect them for recycling.
If we take good care of our earth today,it will be more beautiful tomorrow

Littering and illegal dumping is a serious problem in Queensland. According to the Keep Australia Beautiful National Litter Index, Queensland is the most littered mainland state in Australia.

Queensland communities want and deserve a clean environment, without the health and safety hazards imposed by inappropriate disposal of waste. The presence of litter attracts even more litter—which attracts antisocial and illegal activities. For more information, see the fact sheet Why Preventing Littering and Illegal Dumping is Important.

With the introduction of the Waste Reduction and Recycling Act 2011, members of the public can speak out and report littering and illegal dumping involving a vehicle or a vessel.

This initiative will help minimize waste hazards on our environment, as well as dealing with the much broader social impacts of littering and illegal dumping.

If littering or illegal dumping was personally witnessed you can report it now.

Witnesses of littering and illegal dumping offences can request to have a reporting form mailed by contacting

The difference between littering and illegal dumping is determined by size.

What is littering?
Littering is a small amount of waste (less than 200 liters in volume—that is smaller than an average household wheelie bin). Types of littering from a vehicle or vessel include the throwing of items such as cigarette butts, plastic or glass drink bottles, fast food wrappers, apple cores, orange peels and other fruit, fishing tackle and bait bags. It also includes items falling off the back of a use or trailer because of an uncovered or unsecured load.

Dangerous litter is any litter than can cause harm to humans, wildlife and property. This includes items such as broken glass left on footpaths or playgrounds, sharps or syringes.

What is illegal dumping?
Illegal dumping is the unlawful deposit of waste that—when viewed in its entirety—is greater than 200 liters (about the volume of an average household wheelie bin). Types of waste can range from bags of rubbish in public areas such as roadsides, parklands and private land to larger scale dumping of waste including building (construction and demolition) materials, household goods, abandoned cars, scrap tires and hazardous waste.
Why does illegal dumping happen?
People dump waste illegally to avoid disposal fees at landfill sites or because they do not want to spend the time or effort disposing of or recycling their waste properly.

Offenders often go to extraordinary lengths to illegally dispose of waste and avoid detection and prosecution. Ironically, legal disposal may have cost far less in fuel, time and effort.

Why is illegal dumping a problem?
Illegal dumping ruins the image of Queensland and damages its reputation. Sites where waste is dumped illegally:

Degrade the local environment and threatens native wildlife
Reduce property value
Attract more dumping, other illegal activities and antisocial behavior
Decrease community pride
Cause health and safety risks
Attract vermin and insects, such as mosquitoes and mice
Block drains and waterways causing flooding and erosion damage
Increase the risk of fire hazard
Require time, money and energy to be cleaned and repaired.
Where does illegal dumping occur?
Small amounts of illegally dumped waste are generally found:

Roadside
In parks and reserves
In car parks
On vacant blocks of land
Beside charity bins, garbage bins or skips.
Larger items are dumped in isolated areas such as bushland reserves, national parks, and industrial or building sites.

Legal disposal and recycling
Illegally dumped items are a lost resource because many items can be recycled, such as:

Organic garden material
Aluminum cans
Fridges
Computers
Tires
Car bodies.
Local councils offer a variety of information and services for disposal of excess rubbish, green waste and larger items.
